Risks, damage, vulnerability and resilience
6.1 Basic concepts
The purpose of this chapter is to propose some basic concepts for the following
terms: damage, risk, vulnerability and resilience, and to present some elements of
the damage associated with the use and abuse of drugs.
This is absolutely not an exhaustive presentation, and rather, the aim is to stimu-
late a process of ref‌l ection at the local level.
Risk and protection factors.
Risk (risk factors). A set (sometimes a system) of conditions or variables that
contribute to reducing the probabilities of positive results and increasing the pro-
babilities of negative results. This concept may be applied in the areas of health,
education, work, social life, economy, etc.
Protection (protection factors). A set or system of elements that increase the pro-
babilities of a positive result and diminish the probabilities of a negative result.
Damage and negative consequences.
Damage: The negative consequences of an action, independently of whether or
not they are pursued by the subject. This term is related to the worsening of previous
living conditions.
