Unam Students Create Smart Vest for Cyclists

Mexico, May. 11 (Notimex).- A group of students from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM, for its acronym in Spanish) developed a smart vest called Safe Ride, so that cyclists are visible in the night to avoid accidents that endanger their lives.

The device created by students of the Faculty of Science has a 3.7 rechargeable lithium battery and leds on the back in the form of directional volts, which light up if sensors detect movement, detailed the UNAM in a statement.

Physics student, Damien Real, one of the creators of the device, said the leds of the vest turn on and off when the cyclist stretches one of his arms, alerting motorists and pedestrians.

In addition, the device has a direct connection to the mobile phone, allowing alert users via Twitter if the bicycle undergoes acceleration changes.

Real said the garment has an accelerometer with three axes and by having a gear in axis acceleration X, which could be the front, it records in the 'brains' of the programmed vest to perceive changes.

Sensing a change in acceleration, the vest signals the mobile device using the Bluetooth system, which is sent to registered users and Twitter´s API (Application Interface), which lets you know where it happened, explained the student.
