Egyptian revolution in the awake of the Arab Spring

It is for some people natural to think that poverty is the main cause of the
uprisings in Middle East and North Africa, but before thinking on focusing on
economic poverty as the only condition for unrest, we should try to
understand the causes and consequences of economic poverty throughout
the region as well as to try to identify the different types of poverty present
on the social groups that have risen their voice against the governments and
systems that have caused this social and economic condition.
There is a current debate on the field of the International Relations and
Social Sciences on how to define poverty and how to understand the
different concepts of poverty better when talking about specific needs of a
specific population (Lister, 2004, pp. 12-36).
We could approach poverty from its Cambridge dictionary definition which is
“the lack of something or when the quality of something is extremely low”,
but certainly, this description would be rather
poor
when trying to explain
social sciences phenomena, nonetheless it stands as a very good departure
point for understanding the problematic about poverty definition.
