Ecuador rewards IPN researcher for spirulina algae studies.

Mexico, Dec. 8 (Notimex).- The ambassador of Ecuador in Mexico, Leonardo Arizaga Schmegel, gave the scientist of the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN, for its acronym in Spanish), German Chamorro Cevallos the "Vicente Rocafuerte Prize", for his contributions in the study of algae (cyanobacteria) Spirulina.

The award, instituted by the government of that country to recognize outstanding Ecuadorians in different areas of human knowledge distinguished this year the researcher of the National School of Biological Sciences (ENCB, for its acronym in Spanish) and member of the National System of Researchers (SNI, for its acronym in Spanish) level III.

Chamorro Cevallos recalled that he initiated research on Spirulina when the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) asked him to conduct toxicity studies, through which the IPN specialist verified the safety of the product.

Likewise, it corroborated the nutritional composition previously reported by the National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition Salvador Zubiran and other institutions in the world

The researcher said that over the years has proven the benefits of spirulina, so he considered that its cultivation and large-scale production in Mexico should be promoted again, as well as its consumption among the population as a preventive measure for various conditions.
