Dr. Richard "Dick" Talbot's life and achievements were honored at a special luncheon and rededication ceremony held Thursday by the Rotary Club of Blacksburg. Talbot was president of the club from 1993-94 and founding dean of the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech.

Allen bankruptcy impact Gov. Martin O'Malley said Thursday that several agencies are ready to help workers and businesses impacted by the Chapter 11 filing of Seaford, Del.-based poultry producer Allen Family Foods. Among others, the departments of Business and Economic Development and Labor, Licensing and Regulation will assist with job training and information on job retention/creation incentives, and assess whether Maryland poultry companies can hire laid-off employees. Earlier, state Sen. Richard F. Colburn, R-Upper Shore, said the bankruptcy would devastate his district, especially Talbot County where Allen is the second-biggest employer. Allen said it plans to sell many of its assets to an affiliate of Millsboro, Del.-based Mountaire Farms.

(10 years ago) As an optimistic afternoon sun swept away steel gray morning clouds, perhaps somewhere Richard B. Talbot was smiling. Talbot, the late founding dean of the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, was ever the optimist, his former colleagues recalled Thursday as they dedicated a small park along the Huckleberry Trail in his memory.

Matthew Lombardi signed a three-year extension with the Calgary Flames on Friday. The 25-year-old forward is coming off a breakout season.
