The scope of this essay relates the policies of the United States in Afghanistan with the gender practices of the U.S. Armed Forces. Firstly, the paper encompasses a general contextual placement of women in Afghani society, and argues that the United States government capitalized upon the human rights violations against women to help justify its 2001 invasion. After a brief overview of the gender approach of focalized aid programs in the country in the post-invasion era, the author explores the practices of the United States Armed Forces at large. This paper proposes that U.S. policy must adopt a holistic approach to gender mainstreaming, starting from within its own ranks, in order to effect a sustainable change on Afghani social constructions. There are host of crime and punishment challenges facing the nations of the world at the outset of this new century, and there seem to be few if any answers. In many ways, criminologists today are much akin to physicians 200 years ago; we, like they, have a few ideas, but very little knowledge. Since 1800 however, the field of medicine has seen nearly incommunicable levels of advancement. Of course death, like crime, will never be eliminated, but some diseases have been virtually eliminated and the impact of others significantly reduced, life expectancy has nearly doubled, and the quality of that life greatly enhanced. If the field of criminology wishes to advance, it should adopt the same procedural model as utilized by medicine. That procedural model includes the adoption of cross-nat...

“The paper will analyze the pros and cons of the strategy already in place and will argue in favor of an expanded and directly UN controlled and monitored peacekeeping operation. It will objectively evaluate a view held by many that the operation in its present form is not the best of options and may even backfire. It can be argued that it has “lingered” on successfully so far as the US ground forces combating terrorists are also present in the conflict theatre, a factor which has indirectly strengthened the image and role of security forces in Kabul.” “The paper will also draw upon lessons learned from previous and relevant peacekeeping operations and will reflect upon key issues generally involved in peace operations such as consent, impartiality and...
